USAID- LPHS-E Success Stories

Growing her business to provide for her family

July 5, 2023

Nakato Margaret, 27, lives in Kiyindi Town Council, Zinga village, Buikwe district. Margaret was a stay-home mother who focused on growing sugarcane for sale to earn a living. Unfortunately, the money she was getting was insufficient to support her and her two children. Margaret was enrolled on the project during NFM2, and was taken through community-based vocational training in hair dressing. After acquiring the skill, she borrowed UGX 300,000 from a friend to pay three months’ rent to start a salon. She then bought a counter, mirrors, lotions, electric shaver to ease in hair trimming and other salon items. Today, she is able to trim men’s hair and plait a variety of women’s hairstyles. With her income, she bought a fridge and sells soft drinks, takes care of herself and the children, and is able to furnish her salon.
