Baylor-Uganda through the Saving Mothers Giving Life (SMGL) program continued to make a difference in the lives of mothers and their new born babies in the three districts of Kabarole, Kamwenge and Kyenjojo with an aim of reducing maternal mortality by 50% and neonatal mortality by 30% by 2017. Over the last four years, Baylor-Uganda through the SMGL program has strengthened critical human resources, built skills through on-site trainings, improved logistics management for essential medicines, strengthened referrals across all levels and increased community mobilization for maternal and newborn services. In addition, a number of infrastructural developments critical to attainment of project goals were made. Such infrastructural improvements at Kibiito HCIV, Kyenjojo Hospital and Bukuuku HC IV have seen marked increases in the number of deliveries, antenatal and postnatal care (ANC and PNC) attendance. This underscores the need to offer dignified birth facilities and services to woo more pregnant mothers to deliver at health facilities under skilled attendance.
