My name is TumwineEnoth,I am 42 years old. I stay inNansana Town council zone west with my two children,AkundaEnoth (11yrs) and Amumpaire Diana (6yrs). Akunda and I are HIV positive.
For some time I worked at a retail shop in the city center, selling cosmetics. In a month I would earn 400-500,000Ugx however due to steep rental charges and other operational costs, my net profit would only amount to 100,000Ugx per month. With such a miserable income, it was hard to keep my appointments at the clinic. Many times I could not cover my transport costs and cater to personal expenditures.
Through Baylor’s empowerment scheme, I received knowledge and skills in entrepreneurship.Upon finishing this training, I got a loan of 500,000Ugx from Opportunity Bank to help start my own business. In January 2016, coupled with 300,000Ugx from personal savings, (Making a total of 800,000Ugx in startup capital) Istarted a book binding business.

I used 600,000Ugx to buy raw materials like Papers, hard boards, glue, scissors, threads and binding cloth. One month in business, my net profit was 100,000Ugx. With time, my customer base increased but I could not satisfy the demand and so, I got another loan, 800,000Ugx this time. With more money, I was able to buy more materials and I was able to satisfy the demand. My net profit increased to 200,000Ugx per month.
During this time period, there arose demand for liquid soap, so I set aside200,000Ugx from the 800,000Ugx loan to start making and supplying liquid soap as well. After four months in business, I got 170,000Ugx in net profits.
I bind books and make liquid soap. From these two businesses, I managed to save 1mil shillings. I added this 1mil to 2.5mil shillings that I had saved from doing some farm work and bought one acre of land in the village.
In September (2016) Igot another loan of 1.1mil shillingswhich I am still paying back. However, my businesses are moving on well. I can buy food for my two children (AkundaEnoth and Amumpaire Diana). I can now pay my rent. I can cover my own transport costs and keep up with all my appointments at the clinic. I am really grateful to Baylor.
